Contemporary Theory in Ethics
Course Description
This is a foundational course in Christian social ethics examining moral law and ethical practice applicable to the myriad forms of contemporary pastoral and spiritual ministry. Acknowledging the intersection of contemplation and action, students will examine how church leaders and community ministers are called to love God, themselves, and their communities morally and responsibly. The focus of the readings is on ethical method paying particular attention to recurrent themes and issues in the work of Christian social ethicists. We will trace the treatment of love, forgiveness, reconciliation, and justice through topics including: ecclesial leadership and (mis)use of power; violence/non-violence and coercion; boundaries to protect vulnerable persons and public trust in ministers of the Church; hospitality (justice, equity) toward marginalized and oppressed peoples; confidentiality and its limits; financial stewardship; and providing ethical guidance through teaching, preaching, advising, pastoral care and counseling, or spiritual direction. The intended audience includes MDiv, MA, and other Masters-level students.
