Even a basic of knowledge of Sanskrit is important for students interested in deepening their understanding of Dharma (Hindu, Buddhist, Jain) religious, philosophical, theological, literary and aesthetic textual cultures. By the end of the semester, students should be well-equipped to begin reading passages from certain primary texts. Two basic textbooks will be utilized in the study (including Madhav Desphpande's Sa?sk?ta-Subodhini ). The class will meet once a week for two hours, and another hour will be devoted to a supplementary tutorial. Assessment will be via regular weekly exercises, tests papers and a final exam.
