Course Description

In this seminar, students will read the Gospel according to Mark in conversation with postcolonial, decolonial, and Afropessimist thinkers, focusing on questions of life, death, violence, and memory. Students will: (a) read pivotal works of postcolonial, decolonial, and Afropessimist thought and (b) deploy these critical perspectives in their own creative readings of the Gospel according to Mark and its Roman Mediterranean context. Student learning will be assessed on the basis of participation, reading responses, and a research paper. Prerequisites: A graduate-level introduction to Gospel literature (e.g., NT2528) or equivalent foundation course. Students who do not meet this requirement may register for the course with instructor approval. Knowledge of ancient Greek is not required. [12 max enrollment; Auditors With Faculty Permission]
